Who Has The Most Chakra In The Akatsuki?
The Akatsuki was a terrifying group that wreaked havoc throughout the Ninja world, and they used impressive amounts of chakra to do so.
The Naruto franchise boasted some of the most iconic villains in all of animanga but even in the series, one group stood head and shoulders above other antagonists. The Akatsuki was a group of rogue shinobi from all around the world that were united under Pain in order to enact the revolutionary’s vision for the future of the ninja world. Each individual member possessed extraordinary abilities and chakra that made them fearsome opponents indeed, but which member possessed the most chakra?
In Naruto, chakra is the physical and spiritual energy that all human posses and the internal power source shinobi use to fuel their ninjutsu and genjutsu. The amount of chakra someone possesses is usually dictated by genetics, but can be increased over a period of time through training or other unconventional methods such as forbidden jutsu. Quite a few members of the Akatsuki have increased their original chakra pool one way or another but even among them there were some vast gaps in chakra level.

White Zetsu’s power to instantly teleport himself to any location through the earth was certainly one of the most powerful jutsu in the Naruto series, it was never particularly chakra intensive. It was most likely an intrinsic ability he gained from having his DNA spliced with Hashirama Senju, the original wielder of the Wood Style Kekkei Genkai.
It could be argued that his alter-ego, Black Zetsu, is even weaker. Black Zetsu never showed any powers of his own apart from his extraordinary longevity and couldn’t face even the weakest ninja in battle. Instead, he relied on manipulation and subterfuge, successfully hoodwinking the most influential shinobi throughout all history into doing his bidding despite not being able to face them in combat. Without a host body to cling to, Black Zetsu is completely powerless.
Hidan is yet another member of the Akatsuki that didn’t possess any flashy jutsu. Instead, he had a singular ability that all-but-guaranteed his victory once it had been successfully activated. After tasting his opponent’s blood, their body became linked to Hidan’s, inflicting whatever injury he suffered and vice-versa. It was borne out of his devotion to the mysterious god, Jashin. The immortality he gained from was undergoing the occult rituals and jutsu that he and other followers of the religion underwent allowed him to continually use this technique safely.
To compensate for his lack of ninjutsu, Hidan was an expert handler of his scythe and taijutsu. He went toe to toe with Konoha legends like Asuma Sarutobi and Kakashi Hatake, resisting defeat both times. Together with his partner, Kakuzu, Hidan defeated the Jinchuriki of the Two Tails even after she underwent a perfect transformation. Even without a lot of chakra, he’s no weakling.
As the only “average human” in the Akatsuki, Konan’s strength is perhaps the most impressive in the entire group. Without the benefit of body modifications, elite clan ancestry, or gifted Kekkei Genkai, she managed to not only remain a member of the most dangerous rogue ninja assembly in all history, but to rub shoulders with the best of them. Her jutsu involves origami paper, which isn’t a traditionally dangerous material, but Konan’s resourcefulness has honed her tool of choice into a weapon any assassin would envy.
Since Konan prepares each sheet ahead of time and summons them instead of creating the paper herself, her jutsu doesn't demand a lot of chakra. Apart from needing to remotely detonate her paper bombs and maintain her form, Konan doesn’t expend much chakra while fighting. Even after unleashing what she claimed to be 600 billion paper bombs against Obito, Konan still had a respectable amount of chakra saved up and could have continued fighting had the crafty Uchiha not ambushed her.

Even though he was the first Akatsuki member to divulge their jutsu and was engaged in a battle for most of his on-screen presence, precious little is known about Deidara or the mouth on his hands that are responsible for his explosive art. Deidara molds his own chakra into the exploding clay he carries on his pouch, allowing him to create bombs that are as powerful or discreet as he needs them to be, and can even make constructs that are large enough for him to ride.
Deidera’s explosives each contain a tiny bit of his chakra that is expended once they detonate. This means he can't use his explosive technique indefinitely. While battling Sasuke Uchiha, Deidara managed to push the young shinobi to the point of near death using several powerful attacks, but was unable to finish him off because he ran out of chakra at a critical moment. While Deidara’s chakra reserves are larger than the average shinobi, his unique jutsu does drain them quite fast. In a battle of endurance, he would surely lose.
In pursuit of art that could withstand the ravages of time, Sasori ended up shedding his human body and transforming himself into a loving puppet. His transformation allowed him to overcome the gradual weakening that afflicted all humans as they age, but he somehow managed to retain the full use of his chakra network and all the puppetry ninjutsu he learned and pioneered in his youth. Of course, he added a few new bells and whistles to his eternal new body.
In addition to his own base chakra, Sasori kept several different jutsu sealed within scrolls that he could unleash against his opponents at a moment’s notice. These included a fire style jutsu fierce enough to melt stone and a water style jutsu he could shoot with enough pressure to slice through rocks. Sasori also had enough chakra to retain complete control of 100 puppets, and could appropriate the chakra properties of humans he transformed into puppets while controlling them. He was finally defeated not because he ran out of chakra but because of Sakura Haruno and Granny Chiyo's tenacity.
Kakuzu’s love of money naturally saw him in charge of the Akatsuki’s finances, but before he joined the villain group, he was a bounty hunter. Apart from impressive physical strength and taijutsu skills on par with Hidan, Kakuzu also had the rare ability to use all 5 nature transformations, a Kage level feat – allowing him to imitate Hidan’s immortality to some degree, because of his morbid secret.
Kakuzu could fit up to 4 extra hearts in his body, which allowed him access to the nature transformations their previous owners had. Until all his 5 hearts are destroyed, Kakuzu is positively immortal and can even steal a new one from his opponent to replenish his stock. His hearts are also capable of separating from his body, creating 4 different autonomous entities that can each use a single nature transformation. In all his fights, Kakuzu never seemed to worry about chakra conservation, using powerful jutsu one after the other with reckless abandon. Even without extra hearts, Kakuzu’s chakra level is abnormally high.
Itachi Uchiha is probably the most beloved character in the entire Naruto franchise, and for good reason. He had an exciting and sympathetic backstory, powerful jutsu, and was the elusive object of obsession for the series’ deuteragonist, Sasuke Uchiha. As a member of the elite Uchiha clan, Itachi inherited a larger than average chakra pool, but even among his clan mates, he was exceptional.
Described as a generational talent, Itachi didn’t have a lot of scenes where he flaunted his chakra around. Rather, what was impressive was the sophisticated manner in which he used chakra. His genjutsu was the stuff of legend and somehow, the rogue Leaf ninja managed to implant a delayed activation genjutsu into Naruto without the Jinchuriki or the Tailed Beast in his body noticing. Without an eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi managed to summon a Susanoo, albeit an imperfect one, and incorporate ancient weapons like the Totsuka Blade and the Yata mirror seamlessly into his avatar. The mere fact that he wasn't overwhelmed by these divine tools shows how large his own chakra pool is.

As an Uchiha himself, Obito would ordinarily have about as much chakra as Itachi did, but his possession of Hashirama cells gives him an edge over his younger fellow clan member. Like all abilities derived from the Mangekyo Sharingan, Obito’s Kamui, was extremely chakra demanding. While he was able to use it with ease because of his Hashirama cells, Kakashi could only use the Kamui about 3 times a day and only with extensive preparation.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Obito managed to use the Rinnegan with ease, employing the same strategy Pain did and shared his vision among the corpses of the Jinchuriki. Even after he discarded the Jinchuriki, Obito had enough chakra to take on several members of the Allied Shinobi Alliance, including Naruto, Kakashi, and Might Guy and never once complained or worried about his chakra level despite fighting opponents who were constantly getting replenished by Naruto. He is easily one of the highest ranking Akatsuki members in terms of chakra.
Known worldwide as the Tailless Tailed Beast, Kisame Hoshigaki’s superhuman levels of chakra and unprecedented mastery over water style jutsu made him the best in the Akatsuki at capturing targets alive. His giant sword Samehada may have given him a boost in chakra, but contrary to popular belief it isn’t the secret behind his massive reserves. Kisame had enough chakra to warrant the nickname.
Kisame and Samehada had a mutually beneficial relationship until the sentient sword found new allegiance to Killer Bee. In combat, Samehada could steal the chakra of his opponent’s and give it to Kisame. While they weren’t fighting, Kisame could generate enough chakra to sate the ever-hungry sword without weakening himself. This process went on for so long that their chakra signatures became identical. To sensory ninja or anyone else that were attuned to chakra, Kisame and Samehada were one and the same. When he needed to, Kisame could borrow chakra from Samehada, or simply fuse with the sword.
Nagato was specifically chosen by Madara Uchiha to wield the Rinnegan because of his Uzumaki heritage. As an Uzumaki, he shared the titular character’s massive chakra reserves and may have even had more since he was full-blooded. As Pain, he could remotely control six avatars of himself over vast distances, and even channel powers originally belonging to the Sage of Six Paths through them. Even at the height of his power with the Rinnegan, Obito never attempted even the weakest Almighty Push. Meanwhile, Nagato managed to unleash one with enough force to destroy the entire Leaf Village. Mere minutes later, he unleashed an even more powerful jutsu; a Planetary Devastation large enough to dwarf a fully manifested Nine Tails.
The Rinnegan may have helped him master several ninjutsu abnormally quickly, but without a chakra pool large enough to power them, the mere know-how would have been useless. Nagato managed to fuse with the Gedo statue without dying and wielded its terrifying power to destroy an entire battalion of shinobi. During the invasion of the Hidden Leaf performed several feats of ninjutsu that would have convinced any viewers that his claims of divinity were true. He passed away after casting the Rinne Rebirth jutsu not because it demanded more chakra than he usually had available but because he was already weakened and drained of chakra after a prolonged battle with Naruto. Throughout all the Akatsuki, there was no one that could match his chakra output.
