The Barbie Sing

Jul 09, 2023

The Bachelorette has had many group dates over the years. However, Charity Lawson's Barbie Sing-Off was one of the best the show has ever done.

The Bachelorette season 20, episode 3 Barbie Sing-Off group date was one of the best in the show's history. On the date, which was hosted by The Bachelorette season 12 married couple JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers, Charity Lawson chose 12 men to dress up as Ken dolls and write and sing a love song for her to the tune of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." The men on the date included Aaron Bryant, Aaron Schwartzman, Adrian Hassan, Caleb Balgaard, Dotun Olubeko, James Pierce, Joey Graziadei, John Buresh, Michael Barbour, Sean McLaughlin, Tanner Courtad, and Xavier Bonner. They all performed in front of a live audience of fans.

During The Bachelorette season 20 Barbie Sing-Off group date, one of the stars of the Barbie movie, Simu Liu, sent Charity a message of encouragement. The Sing-Off was a contest in which the winner would earn some extra time alone with Charity. Sean, who acknowledged that he looks like a Ken doll, won the contest after sharing a passionate kiss with Charity at the end of his performance. Charity even admitted that she forgot they were on a group date for a second. Although there was some conflict between Sean and the men at the after-party, the Barbie Sing-Off part of the group date was one of the best ever.

For The Bachelorette Barbie Sing-Off date, the men chose their Ken doll costumes, which included wigs and accessories in some cases. Although some of the men, such as Caleb B., have shown their personalities throughout the season, many of the guys on this date have been shy or reserved until this point. This date really showcased their personalities as they dressed up in their Ken doll costumes.

The twelve guys embraced the competition, putting their all into their songs and their performances. They chose their costumes, including Aaron B. (Merman Ken), Aaron S. (Glitter Beach Ken), Adrian (Classic Ken), Caleb B. (Cowboy Ken), Dotun (Astronaut Ken), James (80's Prom Ken), Joey (Rollerblade Ken), John (Birthday Suit Ken), Michael (Bad Boy Ken), Sean (Double Denim Ken), Tanner (Ice Skater Ken), and Xavier (Sugar's Daddy Ken). Sugar is the name of Ken’s little white dog. They laughed and had a great time.

The Bachelorette Barbie Sing-Off forced the men to step out of their comfort zones, but in the best way possible. Unlike the Dodge Bowl group date which was embarrassing because it required them to compete in Speedos, the Barbie Sing-Off was all in good fun. Although some of the men were nervous about singing in public at first, they really embraced the situation. This helped Charity to see them in a new light.

It was fun to see the normally shy Dotun singing and dancing in a blonde wig with Charity. Caleb B., Aaron S., James, Michael, and Tanner, who haven't had as much screen time as the other men, were highlighted. Xavier even danced with his pretend little white dog, Sugar. It was also a delight to see Joey, John, Aaron B., and Adrian in a new light. John was especially hilarious as Birthday Suit Ken. Sean was also able to rise to the top of the group for the first time since the season began, and win some time with Charity. The date really pushed the men to make themselves stand out.

Bachelor Nation group dates are known for being silly like the Dodge Bowl, to serious like the group therapy sessions. However, the Barbie Sing-Off was simply good, clean fun. There was nothing for the guys to worry about other than singing in front of an audience. The Bachelorette should plan more group dates like this one that allow each of the men to show who they are in a cute and light-hearted way.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
